Basics of Genre
Language Arts

This year in Language Arts, I grew in understanding genre. Genre is basically what type of book a book is. The two artifacts I will be using to show that I understand this is my book talk, and my final storybook. In my book talk, I explained something using the genre of the book. However, in my final storybook, I used a genre to inform in my story.
My first artifact is my book talk. This artifact is from the endeavor Language Arts class. In my book talk, we had to guess who in our Language Arts class period would like our book. I made my decision based on who likes the prequel to my book, and who like reading Science Fiction. I also needed to write a summary of my book that will get people to want to read my book. This artifact shows growth in understanding genre because I had to figure out what the genre of my book was, to get an idea of who might like my book. This artifact also shows growth in genre because I needed to figure out what genre the book to write a summary (in my own words) to get people to want to read my book.
My second artifact is my final storybook. This artifact is from the endeavor storybook project. In my final storybook, I used the genre informational literature with a partner to inform 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders about conflict resolution. To use the genre, I had to understand what genre was. I also had to understand what genre was to write a summary about the book with a partner to get people to want to read my book. This artifact shows growth in understanding genre because I had to understand genre to write a story and summary with a partner about conflict resolution using the genre informational literature.
Understanding genre will help the future me because I want to become an author when I get older, and authors need to understand genre to write stories. I need to further develop this skill by using it in my everyday life. In my spare time, I like to write books, which is a good way to further develop this skill. I glad that this year, I learned how to understand genre.
